The Truth about Trolls

I hadn’t really planned this whole thing very well. For a start, I probably should have considered leaving at a better time of day. It had seemed like a great idea to sneak off in the night, while I had been surrounded by the safety of Holmar. Now that I was out here, on reflection, traveling at night was tough. I was deep in the forest, and it was pitch black. I could barely see my hand in front of my face. God, I might actually be as stupid as Ember repeatedly said I was.

I was just so pissed off that she wanted to part ways over something I didn’t even understand that I’d just thought Whatever! Let’s burst the bubble and get it over with. We’d only known each a couple of days, so it shouldn’t have even mattered to me this much, but it did. I’d left the spell book and everything else we’d collected, including the reward Writ. She was welcome to all of it; hopefully, they could bring her some happiness.

I still intended to get to the capital city, but I would need to rustle up a few crowns from somewhere first. This current quest should put me in a good financial position, and by the time I’d completed it, Ember would be long gone. I wouldn’t have her dark moods and demeaning insults hanging over my head like a storm cloud, ready to burst open at any minute. No more walking on eggshells, with the constant threat of her parting with my company, for no apparent reason. At least alone, I knew where I stood.

I pushed the thoughts from my head, really not needing to dwell on all that shit at the moment. It was in the past now, and I had a job to do. Albeit in the middle of the night, because I stupidly had taken a nap in the middle of the day. So here I was, in near total darkness, in the middle of a scary-ass forest, by myself, with a mining pick and zero visibility, looking for a troll.

I wasn’t too scared about the troll, though it was curious that there was one by itself. I thought the little green shits normally hung out in groups.

Forging onward in the near-total darkness, I kept my hands out in front of me, so I wouldn’t find any trees with my face. I traveled very slowly, heading in what I hoped was a straight line away from the city. At least, I could always track back in daylight, if I kept a straight route.

Four hours later, with no enemies encountered, and the feeling that dawn was around the corner, I decided I could do with a rest. Just a little nap for a few hours to get my body clock back in order. Then I could do the rest of my troll hunting in the daylight. I sat down against a tree, keeping my body pointed in the direction I was traveling, my pick in hand, should anything unexpected happen.
